It became readily apparent during the consultation that the clients military experience was extensive not only in personnel administration but also in general administration, logistics, and resource management. For that reason, we built his resume identifying and focusing on KSAs common to these career fields. The process included extensively fleshing out his experience, which we accomplished by him providing additional job information in response to specific KSA-related questions that I asked. We also used the classification standards for these occupations to identify keywords to include throughout his resume.The result was a resume that clearly brought out his experience and competencies in terms of the KSAs common to the career fields of human resources, administration, logistics, and resource management. Although we normally do not go back more than ten years in a resume, in this case we made an exception in order to highlight his military experience. We also re-described his civilian sales and customer experience in terms of those same KSAs. The announcement for this job closed in March and the client was selected with a report date in June.

Next, you moved on to overcoming objections before earning the right to close the sale or get the job. If youve done a good and thorough job during each of the previous steps, closing the sale may be easy. Or it could be the hardest, most challenging and difficult step that can leave you scratching your head and thin king about changing your career. Where the Rubber Hits the Road If you are in abverkauf or trying to get a sales position, closing sales is what you get paid for or will be hired for. Dont close or dont close enough, and youll join the ranks of the unemployed. The simple fact is that your employer hired you to bring in revenue by closing sales and turning prospects into customers. Closing is where the rubber hits the road, and you prove your worth and those who believe closing sales is s omething belonging to the old school ways of sales will quickly discover just how wrong they are. Closing is also where most sales professional experience anxiety, lose confidence, try to hard or simply avoid having to close at all. While there are hundreds, if bedrngnis thousands of closing tips tricks, the best way to close a sale is to complete every step leading up to the closing step flawlessly. Easier Said than Done So how do you know if youve done a good job in the first 5 steps of the sales or interview cycle, and more importantly, how can you learn from one cycle to make the next even better? The simple answer is to pay very close attention to how your prospect responds to your closing questions. If they seem confused, hesitant, reluctant or even offended, your task is to review each of the previous steps and analyze what you may have missed. For example, if you didnt uncover and overcome all of your prospects objections, you will most likely not be able to close the s ale. If your prospect seems confused about exactly how your product/service/skills will solve their needs, you should review your presentation skills. Each step in Brian Tracys sales cycle leads to the next step. This logical progression has built-in checks and balances that, if followed, help to ensure that you are indeed ready to move to the next step. However, just because you move from the presentation step to the closing step does not necessarily mean that youve covered everything in the step that your prospect needed. Often, sales professionals advance a cycle before making sure that their prospect is ready to advance. When this happens, sales dont happen. Getting the Job For those interviewing for a job, the closing step is when you ask for the job. Questions like When do I start? may seem pretentious but bold questions deliver a message to the hiring manager. Bold questions tell them that the person they are interviewing is interested in the position, if confident and is not afraid to ask for what they want. At the same time, asking a bold question without having earned the right to ask for the job, comes off as overly aggressive, sloppy and seldom results in getting the job. The Best Closing Advice Begin with the end in mind. While this advice may seem simple, it puts you in the correct frame of mind as soon as you begin a new cycle. Knowing that you are prospecting to separate suspects from prospects prevents you from spending your valuable time calling on people who will never become your customers. Building rapport with people that are struggling to make their payroll may earn you a friend, but will probably not earn you a customer. Delivering a presentation to a business who is using your time and resources to build leverage against their current vendor may help you improve your presentation skills but will do nothing to improve your bank account. Each step leads to the next, and each step needs to be viewed as its complete cycle. A great and powerful sales technique is to close the prospect after each step before advancing to the next. Closing on a step assures you that the prospect is on board and recognizes the value that you present. Closing on each step also is a powerful way to uncover objections. Theres an old expression in sales that is summed up by 3 simple letters ABC. This stands for Always Be Closing. What this means is that you shouldnt save any closing questions to the Closing Step, but should make use of trial often closes, early and certainly before advancing to the next step in the cycle.

Personal anecdotes andscientific evidencedemonstrate that our attentional capacity peaks near age twenty and diminishes over time. While theres nothing wrong with showing personality on your Twitter or Facebook profiles, youll want to make sure you have a clean platform. By the same token, media companies will want to know that youre active on social media. If you dont have very many followers or just arent that active on social media, be prepared to answer why. Interview Mistakes to Avoid Aside from making sure you look professional and you are on time - two things you must do - you want to make sure youve studied the right topics to ensure the interviewer doesnt stump you on any questions. Although you shouldnt think of an interview as an antagonistic situation - most interviewers arent trying to test you or catch you off-guard - you dont want to draw a blank when youre asked a question. Thats why you should study up on a few things, and come up with answers to potential questions, before the big day. And dont forget the importance of eye contact. You want to show that youre a confident, strong candidate who can get the job done. Nothing demonstrates how invested you are tha n by maintaining eye contact with your interviewer. These rules - especially about your appearance - also apply if youre doing a remote FaceTime or Skype interview. Just because you arent sitting face-to-face with your interviewer doesnt mean you can interview in your pajamas. Make sure you look presentable - after all, you do have to put your best foot forward. As for phone interviews, keep your voice professional and calm, and imagine that youre sitting in an office at the company. Questions You Can Expect One of the biggest pet peeves you will hear editors and hiring managers complain about when it comes to interviewing, is talking to candidates who dont know their company or their publication. This doesnt mean if youre interviewing at an imprint of Random House you need to know the history of the publisher. When I welches interviewing for jobs out of college - mostly editorial assistant positions at magazines - I knew about those magazines. I had a working knowledge of the general topics they covered - and I studied them. So when I was asked questions like Whats your favorite section of the magazine? I had an answer ready. Other questions that might have stumped me, had I not prepared, were Whats one thing you would change about the magazineif you have the opportunity? and If you were going to write a story for us tomorrow, what would it be about? To answer any of these questions about a publication, you need to know it inside and out. It wont do to simply know Sports Illustrated covers sports or Entertainment Weekly covers entertainment. You need to know specific stories the magazine published recently and the recur ring sections of the magazine. For example, The New Yorker devotes its front-of-the-book to shorter pieces about a wide array of topics. This section is famous and is called Talk of the Town. Now if you strolled into an interview at The New Yorker and didnt know what Talk of the Town was, youd probably blow your chance of getting the job. Have the Right Answers The best way to prepare for a media interview is, as I said above, to study your potential employer. If youre interviewing for an editorial spot at a magazine, grab a bunch of back issues and go over them, or go online and scour through some of the older issues and stories. Decide what you might change if you had the chance. Figure out the sections you like and decide why you like them. Find stories you like and take note of them. You dont need to remember exact titles, but it will be a positiv if you can. Another thing to be aware of, especially when youre going on a lot of interviews, is to avoid mixing up competitors. When youre interviewing a lot, you often have less time to prepare for things. And, moreover, the places youre interviewing may occasionally start to blend together. Try to separate. You dont want to make the mistake of saying you liked a story thatSIdid when it was really a story that appeared inESPN The Magazine. Therefore, before the interview, pay particular attention to getting things like this straight in your head. One thing that notoriously drives editors and others in the field crazy is mistaking them for their competition. One thing to note if you dont have the right answer or just dont understand the question, dont try to talk yourself in a circle. That will only make you look bad. If you need to, ask the interviewer to rephrase the question. It may just point your mind in the right direction. Keeping Your Cool One thing I always struggled with during interviews was my nerves. Theres no question that interviewing is stressful, especially when you have the pressure of needing a job weighing down on you. That said, you need to try and keep your nerves at bay. The more nervous you are, the more likely you are to misspeak or get generally sidetracked. So, know what your nervous ticks are before the interview so you can keep them in check. One of my nervous ticks is talking too much, so I was always aware of this when I went into an interview. I had to pay special attention to make sure I didnt talk too much.
